If I believed in New Year resolutions, one would definitely be to see more jewellery exhibitions, and, fortuitously, there are some amazing ones on in London at the moment! I wouldn't want to miss any of these, so I thought I would give a quick run down, for those of you who would feel the same!
At the V&A there is an exhibition tracing the history of Pearls and their use in jewellery and art since the times of the Roman Empire, with all their associations of rarity and mystique. Be quick, this one only runs until 19th January 2014. The exhibition is also running lectures and workshops for real aficionados!
With my interest in Fairtrade gold from Colombia, the 'Beyond El Dorado' exhibition, at the British Museum until 23rd March 2014, is one that I feel really excited about. There are more than 300 exhibits, dating from 1600BC to AD1700, in a combination of collections from the Museo del Oro in Bogota, and the British Museum itself.
The 'Cheapside Hoard' is on show at the Museum of London, as a complete collection for the first time since it was discovered in 1912, buried in a Cheapside cellar in the City of London. It's an incredible, true treasure trove of late 16th and early 17th century jewellery and gemstones, and the exhibition hopes to reveal some of the mysteries behind its abandonment in the mid 1600s. It runs until 27th April 2014.
Also coming soon to the British Museum: Vikings - Life and Legend, promising jewellery and amulets galore. I will definitely be seeing this one. It starts on the 6th March, and runs till the 22 June 2014.
I hope you find some time to see some of these- and I hope I do too!
Happy New Year,
Jon
