In the Loupe - films from the workshop - melting up platinum

Posted by Hannah - 09 March 2016

Chris, goldsmith and general raconteur, has been documenting some of the processes from his day to day workshop life. Hope you enjoy the films.

Jewellers have been into recycling since way before it was fashionable - I've been melting up some saved bits of platinum for a diamond eternity ring today. It melts at 1,770 C, which is too bright to look at without green goggles. For comparison, gold melts at around 1.060 C, lava from a volcano is 700 - 1200 C, glass melts at 1,500 C, and daddy bear's porridge is 2,043 C... Chris
